Harve Popashapla Amshe Kocholu

Harve Popashpala – raw papaya dish made with homegrown papaya! Pratham helped me pluck and chop it . My paternal granny, Aayi, used to make this often, and now Amma does. I got the recipe from Amma, and she says the masala should be mild, tangy, and sweet – not too overpowering. That’s why we add a bit more tamarind than usual.

Ingredients:- 1 medium-sized raw papaya

– Salt to taste

– 100g approx jaggery

– 10-12 smashed garlic

– 1 tbsp coconut oil

– Masala:

– 1.5 cups grated coconut

– 3 roasted small red chilies

– 4 roasted byadgi chilies

– Double marble-sized tamarind

Method:

1. Grind the masala ingredients to a fine paste.

2. Chop papaya into chunks and cook until just done (7-8 minutes).

3. Add the masala and bring to a rolling boil.

4. Prepare garlic tadka with coconut oil and smashed garlic; add to the dish.
